Technicals: Breadth Is Quietly Firming Under a Rising VIX

Volatility is doing what volatility is supposed to do in a risk-off tape. The VIX jumped about 12 percent this morning to 18.74 and is pressing toward the upper end of the range it has held since September, and the short-volatility side of the market tells the same story from the other direction. On its own, that picture argues for staying defensive, and it matches the flat VIX futures curve in today’s Market Regime post.

Underneath the tape, though, something less expected is going on. The two advance-decline charts sitting under the VIX on this layout, one for the NYSE and one for small caps, have both been firming over the past few sessions, recovering off oversold levels rather than rolling over the way breadth usually does when a top is forming. The small cap line recovering alongside the NYSE line matters: small caps are where risk appetite shows up first, so participation there is what turns a narrow bounce into broadening. The momentum gauge under the chart is climbing out of washed-out territory as well. In plain terms, more stocks are quietly participating than the headlines and the volatility spike would suggest.

That cross-current is the story, but call it what it is: a recovery from oversold, not yet a recovery in the market. Breadth typically breaks before price does at a genuine top, and right now breadth is not breaking, it is bouncing. What would turn this bounce into a genuine recovery signal is specific, and we are watching for exactly this pairing: the advance-decline lines keep moving higher and break out above the upper Keltner channels on this chart, at the same time as the VIX starts to lose steam and turn down. That combination would be a pretty strong indicator of a market recovery.

Until that pairing shows up, the honest read is narrower. If breadth stalls below the channels while the VIX keeps climbing, the firming was a fake out, a brief pause inside a downtrend, and the defensive read wins outright.

We are not calling it either way today. The posture stays defensive, but the watch item is now specific: hidden strength is building under a rising VIX, and the next few sessions will tell us whether it is real or a fake out.
